  • Weekend Reads: Marathons – The cost, the win, the survival

Happy Friday! I’m heading to NYC tonight — not for a race, but for my cousin’s bachelorette party. I’m hoping to squeeze in a quick run in Central Park Saturday morning before the all-day shenanigans begin.

Just wanted to share a few running-related stories I came across recently — all marathon related (hence the title of this post). Worth checking out, if you have some time.

Also, good luck to everyone running the Cherry Blossom 10-miler in DC this Sunday, including my blog pals, Jen and Erin! Such a great race. And it looks like the weather will be nice!

8/50 – Pennsylvania: Philadelphia Love Run

A week after my road trip to Connecticut to run the Savin Rock Half, I headed back up north for another race: The Philadelphia Love Run. Sorry, I’m a little late writing this post—the past couple of weeks have been craziness.

The trip to Philadelphia was super short, but a fun one. My friend, Jen, did the race, too, along with her friends Emily and Rachel. (Read Jen’s race recap here.) Emily and I shared a hotel room together. Always great to have company on these race trips!

7/50 – Connecticut: Savin Rock Half Marathon

Last weekend, my cousin, Janine, and I took a road trip to West Haven, Conn.—a town within the city of New Haven County—to run the Savin Rock Half Marathon. The weather posed some challenges to the race, as well as to the drive up there, but despite that, we had a fun weekend. (more…)

High-fives after practice! Go Girls on the Run!

I’m shaking up my routine a bit this spring by working with Girls on the DC, an organization that empowers young girls to achieve life goals through a series of interactive lessons and running. It’s my first season with the organization, and I’m really excited about it.

  • Spring Races and First Running Injury

My new spring running shoes. Aren't they cute?
My new running shoes. Aren’t they cute?

February has been a cold, cold month. (As I write this, more snow is falling from the sky.) March is around the corner though, which means warmer temps (hopefully) and the start of the spring racing season. I have a few exciting half marathons coming up — two that I’ve been looking forward to since last year, and one that I signed up on a whim earlier this month.

  • 4/50 – Texas: The Hottest Half

4/50 – Texas: The Hottest Half

It was Saturday afternoon. I stepped off a small plane at Dallas Love Field airport and was immediately hit with hot, dry air. I checked my weather app. It was 102 degrees F. Typical end-of-August temps for Texas — the kind of weather that would make the Hottest Half live up to its name. Lucky me.

  • Going to Texas to Run the Hottest Half

Going to Texas to run half marathon #4!
    #runningthestates: Texas!

It’s been almost two months since my third half marathon in North Carolina. The last several weeks, my attention has been focused on training for the Marine Corps Marathon in October, so I haven’t been thinking too much about what my fourth state will be… until now.

I’m heading to Dallas at the end of August to visit a cousin who recently had a baby. I figure I might as well kill two birds with one stone and run a half while I’m over there. I mean, how often do I go to Texas? Considering this will be my first time in the Lone Star State, I’d say hardly ever. So, I’m doing it. I’m running my fourth half in the Texas heat… in a race called The Hottest Hot.

    Just shoot me now.

  • 3/50 – North Carolina: Asheville Half Marathon

3/50 – North Carolina: Asheville Half Marathon

One of my criteria for selecting a race is how flat the course is — the flatter, the better (extra downhill portions are a plus). The Asheville Half Marathon was nowhere near flat. In fact, Ashville is located in the mountains, so more than half the course contained steep uphill sections. People were surprised I chose to do a race in Asheville instead of one of the many located along the coast. My reason?

  • What I learned from running my first half marathon

Quote: Running well is having the patience to persevere when we are tired, and not expecting instant results.

It’s been two weeks since I completed my first half marathon. The race was a challenge — much more of a challenge than I thought it would be. Here are some lessons I learned from the experience:
